Report back from Andy Slaughter, MP for Hammersmith and Chiswick
December 7, 2024 This week began with a debate on phase 2 of the Grenfell inquiry and you can read my contribution here. There were many excellent speeches from Members with the general consensus being, we must go faster with justice for the survivors and bereaved, no further delay in turning the site into a memorial and move at pace on remediation so that tenants and leaseholders are no longer living in unsafe buildings. I feel confident that this will be a priority for the Government in the coming year ahead. At the end of last week I spoke at the second reading of Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill and my speech is in full here. Again, I thought there were many great speeches from Members across the House, and it was clear that the arguments, either for or against, had been well considered. I voted for the Bill and it has now moved to Committee Stage. This is a very important stage of the Bill’s progress as the text of the Bill will be examined line by line to ensure we get the best piece of legislation possible before third reading. Another evidence session of the Justice Committee this week, this time from Director of Public Prosecutions. It was an interesting session with lots for the Committee to consider in the weeks and months ahead. You can watch a short 60-second clip of me explaining the work of the Justice Committee here. Last weekend was a busy one in the constituency with the Duck Pond Market at Chiswick House, donkey rides in Shepherd's Bush and a camel procession in Fulham. All the events were very festive and a sure sign that Christmas is fast approaching. Lots more constituency events this weekend too with Christmas fairs, tree lightings and concerts to look forward to across Hammersmith and Chiswick. Best wishes, Andy andy@andyslaughter.com
