Budget debates were the main focus in the House of Commons this week. Many members were keen to speak, meaning that times for speeches were limited.

As Chair of the Justice Select Committee my speech focused on the settlement for the Ministry of Justice. I highlighted how pleased I was to see real-terms investment in both the Ministry of Justice and Law Officers’ budgets for the first time for 14 years, but also put on record the dire need for some of this investment to be spent on legal aid and access to justice.

Pupils from Chiswick School and West London Free School visited Parliament this week for a tour of the Houses of Parliament, organised through the Education Centre. If there are any local schools who would like to organise their own educational tour, you can do so here.

Sticking with the educational theme, I had the pleasure of visiting Chiswick Scouts on Thursday evening. I had a great time meeting all the children and answering their Q&A session on what it means to be a local MP.

On Friday I met with the new CEO of Chelsea FC Foundation to discuss their upcoming projects in Hammersmith and Chiswick. The Foundation is keen to do more for local communities in the future, with their immediate campaign focus this winter on raising awareness of homelessness and charities who work in the sector. I look forward working with the Foundation on their local community projects for Hammersmith and Chiswick.

After 40 years attending Remembrance services in Shepherd's Bush and Fulham, I am attending the service at Chiswick War Memorial for the first time, laying a wreath and representing the new constituency. My good friend and longest-serving Shepherd's Bush councillor Wesley Harcourt laid the parliamentary wreath at Shepherd's Bush War Memorial.

Best wishes,

Andy

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
