The Crown and Anchor pub at 374Chiswick High Road is set to be relaunched after being taken over by new owners.

The Market Taverns group, a company own by Swedish entrepreneur Rolf Munding, which has a chain of pubs across London including three in Putney, has acquired the venue from Mitchells and Butlers.

It becomes the company’s 15th pub and it will be reopened to the public on Thursday 28 November with a canape reception and a free glass of fizz from 5pm.

The pub was built in the early part of the 19th century and was owned by Young & Co for over a century, the front of the building still bears its sign. The brewery sold it in 2005 and it went through a number of changes of ownership including a brief spell when it was called Shackology.

Market Taverns has pledged it is "absolutely committed" to retaining the Crown and Anchor name which it describes as a vital part of the pub’s identity and its place within the community.

Its spokesperson said, "Our goal isn’t to change what makes this pub special but to build on its strengths, ensuring it continues to deliver excellent service and a fantastic experience for everyone who visits.”

When asked why the company chose to expand into Chiswick they said, “This venue stood out to us because of its fantastic location in a thriving area, surrounded by a community that we’re eager to become a part of. It fits well with the rest of the pubs in our estate, as it’s a cosy community hub which is accessible to everyone. It also helps that our General Manager, Duncan Townsend, is a big rugby enthusiast, having played and coached both in the UK and overseas - making him a perfect fit for the rugby-loving Chiswick area.”

On the food and drink offering they added, “We’ll be keeping the food and drink offering true to what people love about a great pub. Guests can expect classic British dishes made with top-quality ingredients, crafted by our Executive Chef Tony Moyse, who has been delivering outstanding menus across Market Taverns for years. For drinks, we’ll focus on well-regarded favourites alongside a couple of rotating taps to showcase exciting new beers, both local and international.”

Market Tavern's Operations Director, Adrian Laws said, “The Crown & Anchor is a welcome addition to the Market Taverns estate.

“It sits prominently opposite Turnham Green, combining contemporary style with its rich heritage creating a homely bar and offering a fantastic function room with views over the green. We can’t wait to add our touch of Market Taverns magic.”
