Transport for London (TfL) has launched a consultation into changes around Hogarth Roundabout that will see an additional lane added on the westbound approach on the A4 Great West Road.

A dedicated left turn lane onto the A316 would be added and this would be achieved by adding a fourth lane taking up space currently occupied by the slip road in front of the Griffin Brewery.

Roughly half the width of the service road west of the brewery access point, known as Mawsons Lane is proposed to be converted to form new lane.

Access to the slip road would be closed up until the brewery entrance on Mawson Lane. In addition, greenery and a rain garden would be planted to screen the area in front of the brewery and a shared use path for cyclists and pedestrians would be added.

This fourth lane continues to the junction with the A316 after which the westbound carriageway reverts to three lanes.

Access to and from Church Street directly to Hogarth Roundabout would be closed off with the designs showing greenery planted across the current entrance and part of the space incorporated into the new slip lane. To reach Church Street it would be necessary to turn left down the A316 and do a hairpin turn by Chiswick Square in front of the George and Devonshire.

Exiting from Church Street to get to the A4 may require turning left onto the A316 and looking to cross to the opposite carriageway at some point or by joining the westbound carriageway via Chiswick Mall. TfL says that the increase in journey time from Church Street to Chiswick High Road would be just one minute.

The speed limit at the roundabout is being reduced to 30mph from 40 mph although most motorists crossing it would feel happy to get to 10mph in normal conditions. The carriageway will also be resurfaced with a higher friction road surface.

Advanced stop lines are being added to all approaches to the roundabout including eastbound on the A4, northbound on the A316 Burlington Lane and at Dorchester Grove. TfL has confirmed that motorcyclists will not be allowed to use them. Between January 2022 and June 2023 there were 25 slight and five serious motorcyclist collisions at Hogarth Roundabout.

The pedestrian underpasses will also be getting a deep clean and lighting upgrade plus a seating area and cycle parking would be provided at the end of Church Street. TfL says it may be necessary to remove one parking space on Church Street close to Burlington Lane to allow vehicles to turn.

TfL is presenting the changes as being led by safety concerns but when they were initially proposed many residents pointed out that there was a need to expand capacity at the roundabout due to increased congestion. TfL says that Hogarth Roundabout is in the top ten per cent of junctions in London in terms of road safety risk and that the highest concentration of collisions are at the junction with the A316 (Burlington Lane) and the A4 westbound.

A consultation about the proposals is being held until Thursday 5 September and TfL wants people to give feedback in a survey which it says will take 10 minutes to complete and two consultation events are being held at Hogarth House (W4 2QN) on Saturday 10 August from 9.30pm to 12.30pm and Tuesday 20 August from 4pm to 9pm.
