Radio and TV presenter wanted to build gym plus office space
A plan by TV and radio presenter Jamie Theakston to erect an outbuilding in the garden of his home in Barrowgate Road has been rejected by Hounslow Council planners. He submitted the application for the plan in October 2021 but was informed on the 17 December that permission would be refused. The one storey building would have included a Cross Fit gym with a weights area and plyometric jump boxes at the end of an 18 metre garden at the rear of the property. In addition there would have been a bathroom, a kitchenette and an office. The plans included a wood-burning stove with an external flue. The exterior would have featured Yukari Futto cladding with black steel French doors. Five objections were received from neighbours including some on the grounds that the designated use of the building was vague giving rise to a concern that it could become a ‘beds in sheds’ property. In a letter to his agent the council planning department says, “The proposed outbuilding by reason of its excessive size, appearance and use of materials would have a harmful impact on the amenities enjoyed by the neighbouring properties and would be an inappropriate development and harmful to the wider conservation area.” After outlining how it was believed that the proposal contravened Local Plan guidelines the planners. Design for outbuilding submitted with planning application “The inclusion of primary living facilities within the outbuilding may facilitate the future conversion of the outbuilding to use as a self-contained independent dwelling which would be harmful to the amenities enjoyed by the neighbouring properties and the appearance of the surrounding area. “ The father-of-two bought the five bedroom home in 2010 for £3.8 million. The family then undertook a renovation project lasting for two years and put the property on the market for £6.5 million in 2013. In 2017 Mr Theakston gained approval to build a two storey house to the rear of his property in the face of objections from his neighbours.
