Sports in Chiswick

In a virtual rerun of last season’s match, but lacking the pressure, Chiswick made the most of their limited possession to score some great tries.

The U.C.S. pack were stronger than the home eight, and won a lot of scrums against the head. Since they also wheeled the home pack on several occasions, Chiswick had to put in a lot of tackling. This they did superbly, with Graham Robbings, Ben Maguire, Ben Hinze and Mark Jones to the fore. However, it was the home scrum-half Ian Walker who really made the difference, with a faultless display in a very difficult situation, his cover defence, tackling and involvement being exemplary.

Fielding the first hopeful upfield punt by the visitors, Chiswick full-back Lewis Hammond decided to open up, and on the third phase fly-half Keith Luckman put centre Mark Jones away. He linked with wing Rich Felton and Luckman to put No.4 Mark Williams in at the right corner for the first try. Felton failed with the kick.

Next came a mistake by the U.C.S No.8 , who passed from the base of the scrum into a vacant space speedily occupied by Walker. He sped off towards the corner, to score comfortably. No conversion again. U.C.S now camped in the Chiswick half, with the occasional break by the home team. Eventually a long kick by Luckman got Chiswick in the U.C.S half, and slick play at the front of the lineout provided quick ball to Jones. He drew the defence before putting Hinze away for No.3, not converted.

U.C.S came back with a penalty in the second half, scant reward for loads of possession, but this was soon matched by Walker’s. As Chiswick tired, U.C.S briefly looked dangerous, especially in the mauls, but after the ball was held up over the Chiswick line, the home team came back with another cracker. The ball went loose on the Chiswick 22, and Walker grabbed it. Luckman put Jones away, and with Hammond covered outside him he took the last tackle and got the ball sweetly inside to Roman Zakrevsky, who zipped under the posts. Walker made no mistake with the kick.

Chiswick team :- Johnson, Campbell, Donaldson, Williams, Chraplewczyk, Maguire, Robbings (Pickering), Vinden, Walker, Luckman, Zakrevsky, Hinze, Jones ( Dick ), Felton, Hammond.
