Rugby Result - Old Abbotstonians 3 Chiswick 10
On a muggy afternoon, Chiswick came through this first match with flying colours. Abbotstonians grafted hard throughout, their solid pack causing major problems when mauling or interpassing. Chiswick did have a height advantage, however, and did well in the lineouts.
The home team pressed hard from the start, and were soon three points up from a penalty. Chiswick were given little room to move the ball, and fly-half Keith Luckman resorted to a kicking game. He found a good length, and mixed them well, and eventually Chiswick got into the Abbotstonians 22. A good heel, and scrum-half Ian Walker ran across and passed inside to Mark Taylor. Taylor made good yards and released to Ben Hinze who went over the line. Simple. Luckman got the conversion.
Abbotstonians kept the ball near their forwards, and it was a great relief for Chiswick when the referee decided that the massive home prop had been held up over the line after a sustained Abbotstonians move. The home fly-half was the next to be held up just short of the line, but then another penalty for Chiswick increased their lead.
The second half provided more home pressure, which was soaked up by an increasingly confident Chiswick fifteen. An up-and-under was knocked on by the home winger in his half of the field. The ball was moved to Hinze who made a trade mark surge before releasing to the only Chiswick player near him, prop Kelvin Campbell.
Urged on by the Chiswick fans, Campbell passed out to the hitherto ignored winger, Adrian Lewis. He took three attempts before securing the ball, and was caught just short of the home line.
