Chiswick School Celebrating Record GCSE Performance

More students than ever meet sixth form entry requirements

A significant number of Year 11 students at Chiswick School have achieved top grades across a broad range of subjects. Their results are all the more remarkable as nationally grades awarded have fallen to the levels seen before the pandemic.

Amongst the 210 students 30% of grades have been awarded at Grade 7-9 compared to the average for London of 28.5% and 19.4% for comprehensive schools across the UK. History grades were particularly impressive with 20% of all students achieving the top Grade 9. Nationally 67.6% of grades awarded were Grade 4 to 9 and at Chiswick School this is significantly higher at 80%.

Eight students achieved straight Grade 8s and 9s with some individual success stories including Leo who not only achieved seven Grade 9s and three Grade 8s but also an A* in A Level maths despite sitting this early with his GCSE examinations.

A record number of students from all over schools in London enrol at Chiswick School Sixth form which has developed a reputation for achieving excellent results and supporting students to move onto Russell Group Universities.

The success in this regard is evident not only in our students' examination results but also in their growth as confident, responsible, and engaged members of society.”  

45% of students at Gunnersbury School achieved grades 9-7. In addition, 81% of its students achieved 5 or more GCSEs including English and Maths and 90% achieved 4 or more GCSEs including English and Maths.

The school said, “The Year 11s of 2024 have worked hard throughout the last two years to ensure the superb outcomes today. Undoubtedly. their outstanding application in lessons, at home and throughout the exam period, brilliantly supported by their teachers and parents, was worthwhile.”

21.8% of entries across the UK were awarded grade 7 or above, the equivalent of an A grade under the old system which is still used in Northern Ireland and Wales, down slightly on last year but above the level seen in 2019.

The proportion of entries getting at least a 4 or a C, which is deemed to be a passing grade, fell from 68.2 per cent last year to 67.6 per cent this year.

The results show growing inequalities across the country with the gap between north and south and private and state schools widening further.

48.4 per cent of private school entries scored a grade 7 and above compared to 19.4 per cent of those at comprehensive schools.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said, “These pupils have shown remarkable resilience and determination, defying unprecedented disruption throughout the pandemic, Raac and strike action.”
