Children at The William Hogarth Primary School have voted in a national election for under 18s with a record number of pupils taking part.

They made their choices at a Pupil Polling Station with all children in Key Stages 1 and 2 being registered to vote in the national ‘Our Generation. Our Vote’ election in England and Wales.

The headteacher, Avril Stockley, said that the school had decided to take part in the mass-scale election on Friday 21 June for young people because it went to the heart of the school’s Learning 2 Lead programme, which Ofsted graded as outstanding last year.

She added, “What a wonderfully exciting opportunity for children to have their say and share their views on the issues they care about. These children are engaged and motivated to make a difference for good in their community, their country and their world!”

Eloise in Year 1 told said, “If there was no-one voting, there would be no boss of the city, no boss of the country, and no one to care about us,” a view widely shared across the pupils.

Clearly there has been a lot of debate taking part at home as well, Georgia remarked “What I find important is different to my parents,” and Laurence urging adults, “You must go out to vote!”

Pupils at the school waited eagerly to find out the election results which were announced this Friday (28 June). There were over 22,000 votes cast and Labour topped the poll with 31.8% but its margin of victory was less than it was hoping for in the General Election. The Greens came second with 29.5% and the Lib Dems third with 12.9% The Conservatives ended up in fifth position with 8.6% behind Reform on 9.6%

Children cited education (22%) as the policy area that influenced their vote the most, followed by health (18%) and climate change (18%). 16% said cost of living, 12% safety and another 8% named immigration and refugees.
