Chiswick School Celebrates End of Year with a Host of Activities | ||||
Late relaxation of restrictions makes for packed final week
Chiswick School has celebrated the end of the academic year with an array of activities. The aim was to provide students with joyful memories after a challenging year. Following the Prime Minister's announcement that restrictions were not going to be lifted until 19 July, rather than cancel all of its calendared events, the school decided to move them all to the final week of term. The priority was to allow students, staff and families the freedom to enjoy enriching experiences while still putting sensible measures in place. Tommy Robinson the school’s Arts Coordinator staged four plays and a dance show which gave students the chance to perform for parents and carers for the first time in 18 months. The productions ranged from The Marat/Sade to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The annual school Summer Arts Festival was a popular affair with outdoor food stalls, art exhibitions and musical entertainment. It provided a welcome backdrop for much missed social time.
Students at the school participated in a colour run which raised nearly £2000 for charity. Year 8 and 9 had the opportunity to go on an overnight stay at a Bushcraft centre and Year 7 visited Kew Gardens. The Year 10 and 12 students braved the heat for their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver expedition and activities week saw students using computer science to create their own escape rooms, work with Brentford Football Club, conduct scientific experiments and an array of other exciting workshops.
The Year 13 leavers event was a chance for the school’s oldest students to reflect on a remarkable two years. University beckons for many and a fun night was tinged with sadness as they bid a fond farewell to teachers and friends. The school was determined to host the Year 11 prom, headteacher Laura Ellener said “the children have worked their socks off and been stoic and resilient throughout the pandemic, learning at home through live lessons and going above and beyond in their studies while in school. We wanted to throw them a huge party and it was brilliant to see them dancing, having fun and looking beautiful”.
This week the school welcomes its next Year 7 cohort who have a two week summer school to help them with their transition to secondary school. Registrar, Karen Emmett said, “We were delighted to have over 600 applications. Our local primary schools are fantastic and we are so excited that record numbers are joining us this year”. Chiswick School, which was shortlisted for TES Secondary School of the Year, is hosting Open Mornings and an Open Evening for prospective parents in the Autumn term and details can be found on the website - www.chiswickschool.org.
