'Turnham Green Terrace Fairy' Stops The Traffic |

Holds up placard warning of fines but receives hostile reaction from some
A one-woman effort to save unwitting motorists from getting fined in Chiswick has been taking place this week. Carrying a placard and wearing a hi-viz jacket the lady, who has been dubbed the Turnham Green Terrace Fairy, stops drivers and warns them that they will be subject to a fine if they drive along the length of the road. She was first reported on Monday (19 October) at about midday but has returned on a regular basis since then. She has been seen standing in middle of the road holding up the sign which says ‘£130 fine’, a reference to the charge that Hounslow Council are currently making for drivers breaching new access restrictions on the road. We recently reported that Hounslow Council had issued over half a million pounds of Penalty Charge Notices in relation to the new rules in central Chiswick most of which were for contraventions on Turnham Green Terrace. Many of those fined say they were unaware of the restrictions and claimed that they hadn’t seen the signs meant to notify motorists that they were unable to enter the road unless they were making or picking up a delivery. If they pulled over for a period or turned around it is possible that they would not be deemed to have breached the restriction. She has been successful in persuading many to turn around. However, it would appear that some drivers misread her intentions and she reportedly received a hostile reaction from some. One passer-by said, “She is trying to help people - but they are screaming at her.” To have your say on any of Hounslow’s trial Streetspace schemes click on this link or email the transport team on traffic@hounslow.gov.uk.
