New application for cheese and provisions market submitted
Following the successful establishment of the Chiswick Flower Market and approval for a new monthly antiques market on the High Road an application has been made for another regular Sunday event on the High Road. Permission is being sought to hold a ‘Cheese and Provisions’ market on the third and fourth Sunday of each month. This would mean that markets would be taking place in the area in front of the Police Station nearly every Sunday with the Flower Market on the first Sunday and the Antiques market on the second. The first Antiques market was due to take place on 13 December but has been cancelled due to last minute issues with paperwork relating to Covid-19 precautions. The application for the cheese market has been made on behalf of Cookbook Kitchen CIC a recently formed community interest company based in Prebend Gardens. The market would run on the south side of Chiswick High Road from the corner of Devonshire Road to the front of Chiswick Police Station. It plans to sell cheese, meats, vegetables, deli items, bread, cakes, pastries and cookbooks. There would be a maximum of 22 stalls under current Covid-19 required social distancing rules. The proposal is for the market to take place on the third and fourth Sunday of each calendar month starting on 21 February 2021/ 28 February 2021, 21 March/ 28 March, 18 April/25 April and subsequent months until reapplication of licence is required The markets would run from 9.30am to 3pm. Differing views have been expressed about the impact of the Flower Market on established retailers in Chiswick with some claiming that it has provided a substantial boost to turnover by attracting more people to the High Road. On the other hand it is suggested by some that allowing products to be sold in the area by businesses that do not pay rent and rates is unfair competition for existing traders particularly when their product line is the same as that being sold at the market. Kathleen Healy, one of the organisers of the Food Market Chiswick which takes place every Sunday near Dukes Meadows from 10am to 2pm said, "Markets are increasingly popular; they seem to complement shopping online and compensate for stores becoming a less personal, more transactional experience. Markets have a sense of community and offer a recreational way of shopping that is hard to find elsewhere. "Our market turned 21 last September. When the Trust set it up, the park and Pavilion building beside it were derelict. No one came to the park, which was vandalised and plagued with industrial scale fly tipping. The market provided the seed funding for us to retore the Pavilion to create the artists' studios. It brought people to the area again and helped create the momentum for us to raise £800,000 to create two lovely playgrounds and plant the orchard and hedgerows. The park is now hugely popular and busy with families and it all started with the market. Bowls Clubs are closing in Hounslow, but the Dukes Meadows club is thriving, supported by the market. It really has delivered tremendous benefits over its 21 years, spearheading the regeneration of the park. "People love shopping in markets and with the park to enjoy as well, our market has a great offer. This year we invested more in landscaping in the play areas and were delighted to win a London In Bloom Silver Gilt award to add to the Green Flag Award. There is a large population locally and people come from all over to visit the market, so I hope there is room for all to thrive." You can make comments on the application by emailing licensing@hounslow.gov.uk. An application has also been made for a German sausage stall outside Barclays Bank adjacent to 153 Chiswick High Road. The final date for comments on this application has passed.
