The Friends of St. Nicholas Church present a talk by Janet Gough OBE
Join church historian Janet Gough for her illustrated review entitled Sir Christopher Wren and the Rebuilding of London. She will explain how Sir Christopher Wren through his rebuilding of 51 churches and the daring and modern domed St Paul’s Cathedral restored confidence in the King and government after the Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of 1666. The challenging circumstances of late 17th century England will be considered, and you will learn about Sir Christopher Wren and the talented group of craftsmen and artists whom he worked with. In addition there will be a detailed look at several London churches as well of course at the landmark St Paul’s Cathedral. This year marks the tercentenary of limewood carver extraordinaire, Grinling Gibbons, and Janet’s talk is designed to raise interest in Wren’s churches as we approach the tercentenary of his death in 2023.
Janet is former Director of Cathedrals and Church Buildings for the Church of England, and now provides consultancy services under Janet Gough Apsidal Heritage. Awarded an OBE for services to Heritage in 2017, she was recently appointed a lay canon of Bangor Cathedral. Prior to working in the heritage sector she worked in the City and at Sotheby’s. Janet’s two publications Director’s Choice, Cathedrals of the Church of England (revised and reprinted 2020) and Director’s Choice, Churches of the Church of England, will be on sale on the day at a special price of £10 a copy. The talk takes place on Thursday 18 November at 7.00pmin St Nicholas Church, Church Street, Chiswick, W4 2PJ. Entrance is £10.00 of £7.00 for concessions; free to Friends of St Nicholas Church. Doors open at 6.30pm; refreshments will be available. St Nicholas Church has been severely impacted financially by Covid-19 and any donations would be gratefully accepted.
