We’re delighted to announce a new LGBTQI+ film club for the Chiswick Cinema in close collaboration with Peccadillo Pictures. A passion project for the cinema team, we’ve programmed this season based on our Members’ feedback for more diversified, cultural screenings and to solidify the cinema’s close partnership with West London Queer Project into a regular event. Everyone is welcome.

Starting with recent release ‘THE LOST BOYS’ (LE PARADIS), ‘Out West’ will bring the latest in LGBTQI+ cinema to West London, as well as some handpicked classics. Revisit Andrew Haigh’s hugely popular chamber piece ‘WEEKEND’ following the recent acclaim for his latest ‘ALL OF US STRANGERS.’ Celine Sciamma’s ‘TOMBOY’ marks an International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, while documentaries ‘BEFORE STONEWALL’ and ‘I AM DIVINE’ shine bring fresh vitality and new perspectives to LGBTQ+ history.

“It’s a privilege to constantly be inventing what the cinema is and what it means. When we first started our sing-alongs we knew they’d be popular but equally we all felt a hunger for something richer and more meaningful in the cinema’s programme. The success of ‘ALL OF US STRANGERS’ shows that there is demand for works from queer voices across all demographics of our community and it’s a real thrill to be working with the industry leaders Peccadillo Pictures on bringing some regularity to our representative programming.

By adapting the price, we hope to tempt new audiences back to the cinema and foster a social community around these screenings each month. Our Pride programme was very well received in 2022 and by starting to shine lights on different parts of the LGBTQI+ community each month, we hope to show how closely cinema can work with and for its audience. We are committed at Chiswick Cinema to developing a strong ethos through a cultural, social and artistic remit that West London can invest in. Further Clubs and Groups are planned, with future announcements on the way.”

– Chris Parker, Marketing Manager and Programmer

On June 27, 1969, police raided The Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York. In a spontaneous show of support and frustration, the city’s gay community rioted for three nights in the streets, an event that is considered the birth of the modern Gay Rights Movement. This multiple Emmy award winning documentary pries open the closet door, setting free the dramatic stories of gay communities of eras past. Revealing and often humorous, the award winning Before Stonewall exposes the fascinating and unforgettable decade-by-decade history of homosexuality in America, from 1920’s Harlem through to World War II and the witch hunt trials of the McCarthy era, before winding up at the Stonewall Inn one summer night. Before Stonewall is essential viewing for all those who have celebrated their sexuality, or have been persecuted because of it…

50 YEARS ON FROM THE NOTORIOUS STONEWALL RIOTS…Directed by Greta Schiller (Paris Was a Woman) with cinematography by Sandi Sissel (Tyler Perry’s Meet The Browns, Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs), Before Stonewall is narrated by prolific lesbian writer Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle, The Slumber Party Massacre) and features gay poet Allen Ginsberg, lesbian author Ann Bannon, and a cornucopia of gay activists and normal folk telling their stories.

“A striking tribute to the pioneering spirit, radical queerness and sheer divinity of Divine” Time Out, New York

I AM DIVINE is the story of Divine, aka Harris Glenn Milstead, from his humble beginnings as a bullied and teased youth from Baltimore to internationally recognised drag superstar through his collaboration with filmmaker John Waters. Spitting in the face of status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine was the ultimate outsider turned underground royalty. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and revolutionised pop culture .I AM DIVINE is a definitive biographical portrait that charts the legendary icon’s rise to infamy and cult superstar.
