Victim partially blinded in Margavine Cemetery assault

Detectives investigating an attack in Margravine Cemetery on the man who is shortly to take up the post of Governor of Bermuda have made an arrest.

A man was arrested at 6.30pm on the evening of Sunday April 22.

The 29 year-old was arrested on suspicion of robbery and is now in custody at a west London police station.

George Fergusson, 56, was assaulted and robbed at around 7.30pm on Friday April 20, while walking in Margravine Cemetery and Park, also known as Hammersmith Cemetery, close to Barons Cour tube station.

Mr. Fergusson, of Lambeth, made his own way to nearby Charing Cross Hospital, and was later transferred to the Western Eye Hospital in London NW1.

He was discharged on Sunday.

Mr Fergusson suffered facial injuries, and it is understood he has lost sight in his left eye.

A small quantity of cash was taken and officers say at this stage, they are satisfied that robbery was the only motive.

Officers from Hammersmith & Fulham Priority Crime Unit are investigating.

The suspect is described as black and around 5 foot 10 inches tall. He wore a dark hooded top and dark glasses.
