Brentford 0 - Charlton 0 (3-1 penalties)

On a cold night at Griffin Park, Brentford sealed a win on penalties - their fourth victory from five shootouts this season.

Richard Lee was again magnificent, saving Charlton's first three penalties before Gary Alexander eventually sealed our place in the two legged Southern final versus Exeter.

Brentford should probably have won a fairly even and quite physical tie in normal time with three good chances in the last five minutes.

Karleigh Osborne rattled the visitors crossbar after Charlton failed to clear a corner before Charlie Mac pushed a great opportunity past the post after being played in by strike partner Alexander.

Substitute Sam Wood then sent a searing volley flashing across the goal right on the final whistle.

Charlton had a couple of chances too - one long-ranger bouncing awkwardly and almost embarrassing Lee - and the lively Kyel Reid was probably the best attacking player on the pitch, drawing several fouls from Brentford's defence

The Bees had been forced into one change to their recent winning line-up with Robbie Simpson coming in for hamstring victim Sam Saunders. There will be an enforced change at the weekend too as Marcus Bean picked up a fifth booking and will be suspended for the visit of Huddersfield.

Scotty said afterwards 'I thought we were the better side. We've got a knack at penalties - I think we are trying to set a record for the number of shootouts in a season'. He was also pleased that we have kept three clean sheets on the trot.

TV Man-of-the-Match Richard Lee also revealed to Sky that his penalty save from Johnnie Jackson was no fluke as goalkeeping coach Simon Royce had told him today that the Charlton man hits them straight down the middle.

Brentford Football Club have confirmed the first leg of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Final against Exeter City will be at Griffin Park on Monday January 17 with a 7.45pm kick off.

The game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

The second leg will take place at St James' Park on February 8 with a 7.45pm kick off
