Despite the ongoing Covid restrictions the British Rowing Masters Championships for 2021 went ahead this Saturday 12 June. It proved to be a successful day for Chiswick-based rowing club Thames Tradesmen’s at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham.

The local club entered just two races of the over 100 organised with much expertise by British Rowing.

First up was the Open Masters D Pairs Race where Adrian Elliot and Luke Howard (pictured above) set off at a great pace and led the race from start to finish. At the final 100 metres it was a close race between Thames Tradesmen’s and Plymouth Rowing Club with Thames Tradesmen’s winning by just 1 second.

Later on in the afternoon, the Open Masters F Coxless Fours race consisted of very competitive crews, including a crew consisting of rowers from Kingston, London and Walbrook Rowing Clubs.

The crew from Thames Tradesmen’s, Phil Hayman, Philip Hindley, Paul Arnold and Ian Perham rowed consistently well throughout the race but were pipped to the post by the Kingston, London and Walbrook crew.

Club Captain Paul Arnold was very pleased with their performance given crew member Philip Hindley was suffering from a groin strain, saying ‘I’m so pleased with the crews’ performance, we all gave it 100% and to lose by just 2 seconds to a selective crew was outstanding’.

The Club Chairman, Nigel Brophy couldn’t make the trip to Nottingham as the Club’s Development and Recreational squads had outings from their clubhouse on Dan Mason Drive in Dukes Meadows. Nigel was delighted with the crews saying ‘to travel to Nottingham with just two crews and coming home with Gold and Silver medals is a fantastic result for the club and the individuals. The club is going from strength to strength with these competitive wins and the increase in club members due to our on-going Learn to Row and Return to Row courses. It’s great to see so many adults taking up the sport and being able to row on the Tideway, long may it continue’.
