Lightweight pair of Sophie Young and Jess Hardwick victorious
June 29, 2024 The Quintin Boat Club (QBC) is celebrating a win at Henley Women’s Regatta last Sunday (23 June). The Chiswick club's women’s lightweight pair of Sophie Young and Jess Hardwick beat a Molesey / University of Surrey pair by ½ length in a close-fought final. The crew had a bye to the final, but their opponents had disposed of Barnes Bridge Ladies’ RC by 2½ lengths in the semi-final. It has been an 18 month journey for Sophie and Jess who joined Quintin in spring 2023 with one aim in mind - Lightweight pairs at Henley Women’s Regatta. They were rowing in their newly-named boat, the “Mary Hogg”. In 2023 they qualified from the time trial but steering let them down as they hit the buoys off the start and despite a later rally they went down by half a length. Not to be deterred they set their sights on 2024 hoping a full season in the pair would make the difference. After a long hard winters training they achieved a couple of podium finishes at Ghent International and made the A final in Heavy weight pairs at the Met Regatta. Further wins at Hammersmith and Reading got them race ready for Henley Women’s Regatta. The final was always going to be tight as the crews had raced each over the previous regattas and heads. They have always had a fast start and they needed it taking 3/4 length by the end of the Island but never totally breaking clear. Molesey/Surrey was warned approaching the quarter mile and Quintin took advantage taking its lead out slightly further. Quintin was warned about half way but returned to their station and pushed again. They never broke clear but Molesey never headed them. They needed a couple more big pushes before the end to hold their lead and their final one almost took them clear as they crossed the line still overlapping but moving away. Winning with a time of 6:02:78 to Molesey BC / Surrey University 6:04:43.
