Meads bounce back with brace from Hawkins AFA Senior Cup - Old Meadonians 5 Old Brentwoods 2 After last week’s fall from grace Old Meadonians came back to form with a resounding win over Old Brentwoods from the premier division of the public schools’ Arthurian League at Riverside Lands on Saturday. The win puts them through to the quarter finals of the A.F.A. Senior Cup which they won last year. The visitors showed their mettle by keeping exchanges even for the first half hour but only by using an elaborate offside trap which was inevitably undone by the pace of Colin Hawkins who was brought down by the keeper for Dan Salanson to convert the penalty. Meads now showed unnecessary generosity by allowing the visitors’ mid-fielder to run through from forty yards for the equalizer on half-time. Meads started the second period with careful probing which led after fifteen minutes to a Hawkins shot being handled. Salanson’s spot kick did the rest. Within two minutes Hawkins then showed what his tally might have been without illegal interventions by speeding through a tiring defence twice, first to head over the advancing keeper and then to side step before planting the fourth. Meads’ fifth came when sub Ed Glover, returning from injury ran forty yards to squeeze home a cross from the left. In the dying seconds a defensive lapse allowed the visitors their second. Team: Sayers, Salanson, Hankey, McGuinness, Costello, Kearney, Pointon, Quinn, Rhone, (Glover), Bowring, (Cope), Hawkins.
