Whistling Oyster to open in former Strand Antiques premises

A new fishmongers and seafood cafe is planning to open on Devonshire Road.
The business, called Whistling Oyster, will be based on the junction with Ingress Street on the former premises of Strand Antiques at number 46.
They will serve raw or cold seafood and expect the bulk of income to come from the fishmonger business according to a licensing application they have made with Hounslow Council.
An accompanying planning application is seeking approval for reopening the windows to create a shop front on Ingress Street. Two retractable canvas awnings would be installed over shop windows.
The shop will also include delicatessen goods and alcohol will be served with permission being sought to place tables on the pavement on Ingress Street and Devonshire Road for customers to eat and drink in the summer months. If the licence was granted it would allow alcohol to be served until 10pm every day of the week.
We have been unable to get in contact with the people behind the new venture but the name of the business appears to be a reference to an Oyster Bar that used to be on the south side of Drury Lane Theatre, in narrow court leading out of Catherine Street, called Vinegar Yard, in the 19th century. It was popular with artists working in the area and had a sign of a giant whistling oyster outside.
Strand Antiques closed on New Year's Eve in 2021. It was originally set up by Ann Brown on Strand on the Green in 1977 and moved to the Devonshire Road premises in 1999.
