Napoli on the Road Named Europe's Best Pizzeria Outside Italy

A Devonshire Road pizzeria has received another prestigious international award having been named as the best in Europe outside Italy.
Napoli on the Road’s top ranking was announced at 50 Top Pizza event in Madrid this Monday (13 May) in which the top fifty establishments were listed. The award is given only after a rigorous judging process in which restaurants are assessed during unannounced visits. 50 Top Pizza is an independent online guide which evaluates pizzerias with anonymous inspections during which the bill is paid in full.
The gala evening was hosted by Spanish TV personality and cookery host Verónica Zumalacárregui at the Fundación Pablo VI de Madrid.
Last year, the Chiswick restaurant finished eighth with Sartoria Panatieri in Barcelona taking the top spot but this year the Catalan pizzeria was bumped down to second place. The third place on the podium was taken by Via Toledo Enopizzeria in Vienna.

However, it wasn’t all good news for Napoli on the Road with Michele Pascarella losing his title of Pizza Maker of the Year to Tonino Cogliano of IMperfetto in Puteaux, France.

Michele grew up near Naples and has been making pizza since he was 11 helping out in his parents’ restaurant in Caserta. He came to London when he was 19 and worked in a number of pizzerias. Along with his business partner Paolo Cimmino, he set up Napoli on the Road as a pizza truck with its own wood-burning oven inside attending farmers’ markets across London.
In 2019 he opened in Chiswick at 9 Devonshire Road in the former premises of Canta Napoli where a wood fired over was installed. The restaurant also serves pasta dishes and provides gluten-free options.
The top twenty ranked establishments in 50 Top Pizza Europe 2024 will be eligible for nomination in the 50 Top Pizza World 2024 rankings which will be announced at the Théâtre Mercadante de Naples on 10 September.
