Tennis and quiz nights prove major success for cancer charity
Recently, the Chiswick Committee held two events, which raised over £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. In mid-September, the ever-popular autumn tennis tournament at Hartswood Lawn Tennis Club on Hartswood Road had a very successful day. Fierce competition between 24 players resulted in winning prizes for Bridget Preston and Lyndsay Halper and runners-up Vicky Harvey and Margaret Watton. The committee produced, as always, a delicious lunch and a gloriously warm sunny day made it memorable those taking part. The tennis raised about £1300. And on 14 October eight teams of eight people battled it out at a Quiz held in St Michael and All Angel’s Parish Hall, Chiswick. The whole proceedings were ably managed by Torin Douglas and few disputes were swiftly settled. The same team as last year won again – (four of whom sing together in the John Colet Singers). There is now a challenge to endeavour to change this situation next year!! The sharp Chiswick brains were stimulated by a supper of spicy Moroccan chicken followed by exotic fruits and Lebanese pastries prepared by the Committee. Carol Woolner, Chairman of the Chiswick Committee, commenting on the events, said “The Chiswick Committee always tries to give its supporters a jolly evening, or some sporty competition, so they don’t mind parting with hard earned money in support of a charity which they know is helping people with cancer. Many of us have experienced the effects of the disease on families as well as patients and we know that the help given by Macmillan Cancer Support is beyond price.” Future Fund Raising Events for MacMillan November 2, 2006 |
