Barnes comes to Strand on the Green | |||||||
Top jazz man to guest at the City Barge this Thursday
If, like the majority of us, you can only dream of Richter playing to you in the intimacy of your living room why not come down to the City Barge this Thursday and enjoy the jazz equivalent, the doyen of British saxophonists, John Barnes, playing in your own back yard. If it has a reed John plays it but it was mainly on baritone that he blossomed in the Humphrey Lyttleton band from 1979 to 1991. His domination of the Hamlet British Jazz awards on that instrument from 1987 to1991 seems to have tolled the knell of that category which was axed thereafter. Since leaving Humph, John has freelanced but is a fixture in ‘The Great British Jazz Band’, a worthy equal of America’s’World’s Greatest Jazz Band’. It’s his tenor he’s bringing this week. This unique opportunity comes as the usual incumbent at the ‘Barge’ Eric Gilchrist is away on business and so it will be John Barnes with pianist Jack Honeyborne in the upper bar at the City Barge Strand on the Green this Thursday, 19th August, from 8.30 to 11pm.
