This year’s Great River Race down the Thames is taking place on Saturday 21 September.

The event forms part of the Totally Thames Festival the Great River Race and is run upstream from London Docklands to Ham. The gruelling 21 mile course attracts over 330 crews from all over the globe with every level of competitor from dedicated athletes to those who enjoy fun, fancy dress and charity stunts. All boats are of a traditional style with a minimum of 4 oars or paddles and carrying a cox and passenger. The field includes crews from rowing clubs, councils, schools, livery companies, pubs, youth clubs, police, fire brigades, the Armed Services, banks and other companies. It’s always a great day out for both competitors and spectators.

The race begins at Docklands at approximately 1:15pm on a “slowest first, fastest last” handicap basis. The first boats should be passing Chiswick Pier around 3:30pm and continue to come through for at least an hour.

Chiswick Pier is a wonderful vantage point for spectators with excellent views of a long stretch of the river. Coffee Bike will be serving hot drinks as usual from 8am and Chiswick Pier Trust will be serving cakes, cold drinks and wine and beer outside the Pier House from 2pm.

For up-to-date details check www.chiswickpier.org.uk.

The event is organised by the Chiswick Pier Trust which works to engage people with the River Thames. It provides access to the Thames and support major river events, as well as organising events of its own.
