Chiswick Gunnersbury councillor Ranjit Gill reports back
July 20, 2024 Writing this blog, I was thinking how the weeks just seem to come and go. We now approaching end of July and seven months of 2024 have flown past in a flash. Yet to see a proper summer… Monday 15th we had the Community Stars event at Hounslow House. It was well attended, and various individuals and groups were honoured for their hard work. The ceremony was chaired Cllr Dan Bowring and awards were handed out by the leader of the Council Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, the Mayor and various cabinet members. Hogarth Roundabout: As previously mentioned last week by my fellow colleague Cllr Gabriella Giles this consultation went live on 11 July. There will be drop-in sessions at Hogarth House held on the 10th and 20th August. You can reply to the consultation here. Various councillors from both the Conservative and Labour party attended the initial briefing from the Council and TFL. Main concern related to making the roundabout safe. Safety is paramount for all users including the motorcycles and cyclists. Collisions between HGV’s and cars have been a concern for some time although no numbers were disclosed. The current three lanes are narrow, resulting in sideswipes causing damage to cars but more harmful to motorcycles. The three lanes would be widened, and a fourth lane added for 200 metres for traffic heading towards the A316. With addition of the fourth lane a new slip lane to the A316 it would, in theory, reduce congestion for traffic heading on the A316 to Richmond and Twickenham. In addition, the direct access to Church Lane will be closed and a permanent physical barrier would be in place and residents of Church Lane and the Mall will have access via Burlington Lane. This would result with possibility of losing a parking space and various adjustments would be necessary for access and delivery to the pub and for vans and cars to have a proper access to Church Lane. Councillor John Todd, Jack Emsley, Ron Mushiso, Gabriella Giles and I raised questioned on the viability of the scheme and the safety aspect. Councillor Biddolph is currently away, and she will be at the next briefing and will be brought up to speed by the briefing team. The team from the Council and TFL have been in consultation with Chiswick Protection Society. The residents need to engage in the consultation and make their views known. The team had various maps, and these should be available to all residents to view the proposal. All those who worship at the historic Church in Church Lane should also make their views known to the team. The briefing team confirmed that this is a consultation and that it is not a done deal. Housing I had a rehousing case, and I was stunned that the Housing department dragged their feet to the very last day and the afternoon before finding a room in a house to provide temporary housing to a Chiswick resident. A formal compliant has been logged on behalf of the resident so I can’t share the full details. What is annoying is the Council has so many vacant houses, including new builds that are available to house residents, yet the Council spend ratepayers’ money to house residents in temporary expensive accommodation. It makes no sense. EV Charging points not working Many residents are having problems with the new charging points on the street. Although these have been installed but unfortunately, they don’t work. Is the Council working to resolve the issue. Just as an example new EV points on Wavendon Avenue Chiswick do not work much to the annoyance of the local residents in the area. Personal health and care Personally, I have had my fair share of family and friends visiting me this year and I more friends arriving this week and more in November. Looks like all my family and friends have decided to visit me this year. On sad note one of my friend’s husband passed away recently. It was so quick from diagnosis to end of life. It is important that we all have regular check-ups. No matter how small the problem please have, it looked at as soon as possible. Make sure you have a will and all-important information noted down for the next of kin.
