Hounslow Council Celebrates former leader and Recognises Fifty Years of public service

The 10 May Hounslow Borough Council gave a celebratory event for Councillor Jagdish Sharma a former Labour Leader of the Council and a local magistrate.

The celebration was led by Cllr Shantanu Rajawat and included a video tribute from fellow councillors and cabinet colleagues and a speech from Cllr Peter Thompson, Leader of the opposition. Much was made about the friendship and leadership qualities of Cllr Sharma, who came to England and achieved much in his new life here.

A large number of guests, family, councillors, officers and representatives of local associations were there to applaud the longevity of Cllr Sharma”s service.

Hounslow Council Celebrates More active leisure with 57 ideas about locations, and the vast range of parks, gardens and recreation grounds across the Borough

The last few months have been filled with noise and bluster. Politics across England took the lead in newspapers, street campaigns accompanied by social media and television interviews concentrating on the differences in the plethora of opinions being broadcast.

Enough!

Let us all draw breath and enjoy a summer without the noise and clamour. We need locally to look at the opportunities to enjoy the cultural, sporting and leisure facilities that the whole of West London has to offer.

Funnily enough when campaigning in different areas you can come across little gems which local residents can enjoy but which you have never visited. The 57 noted parks and leisure and sporting facilities can be picked up in

Welcome to the first London National Park City Mini-Guide for Hounslow, celebrating Hounslow's great outdoors. Use it to find places to explore, play, or simply sit; groups to join and paths to walk; activities on land or water to try. Get there on foot, by bicycle, public transport or private car.

This mini-guide was created by the National Park City Foundation, the charity behind the London National Park City which launched during the London National Park City Festival in July 2019.

Find out more about getting outside in London and helping to make London greener, healthier and wilder at www.nationalparkcity.london, share the places and things you do online with #NationalParkCity and say hi on Twitter @LondonNPC or Instagram londonnationalparkcity.

Hounslow is uniquely placed with a number of historic residences and large areas set aside as parks, very often quite close to the River Thames or a waterway like the Grand Union canal. We should assess the opportunities that are offered by these stately homes and classically styled buildings. The Borough itself is closely involved in supporting this marvelous resource and operates, often in conjunction with local trusts or management committees or neighbouring boroughs. These committees need to be self-sustaining and if you have the opportunity to do so then volunteering is welcomed at every level. New blood is always required; public spirited and public minded people are in great demand and the greater the number the easier it is to share organisation tasks.

The Work done by the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust in maintaining the Palladian Heritage for future generations

This was a well organised and well attended meeting just six weeks ago. This was a terrific example of public spirit, where permanent staff, volunteers and experts were on hand to learn and listen. One plea was for more residents to join the groups of volunteers on a regular basis:

A March 2024 meeting of the Friends of Chiswick House

From Right to Left
Julie Ritson, who looks after the Trust Social Media and is involved in the Dog Show.

On her right is Alex Matthews who came along to see the plans after hearing of the meeting. She is a local resident.

Between Alex and Xanthe is Debbie McMullen a member of the trust.

Xanthe is on the left with the plans of the proposed works and layout of gardens. She admitted to having a great time meeting the large number of people who attended. Her explanations and enthusiasm were well received by the audience who took the opportunity to talk to the staff and volunteers manning various stalls and offering advice

Over the years we have seen huge changes and when looking at Leisure and Technology these changes often go in step. Audio visual guides have transformed the cultural and educational horizons for example, opening up opportunities for inter activity and such things as historic and archeological learning.

All your Chiswick Councillors share seats on local committees that do their best to protect our physical environment from being spoiled and our urban scene becoming desolate.

Across England we can see examples of needless loss of habitat and damage to the built heritage we all share and which more and more people are cherishing.

Let us all support this good work .
