Ealing Council says it has taken a number of measures to ensure there is no repetition of an incident this week in which a large tree branch fell across South Parade in Chiswick. All trees in the area were reinspected the day after.

It is understood that nobody was injured although the police did attend the scene this Thursday (19 September) cordoning off the area and redirecting traffic. Council contractors had the debris removed within a few hours.

The branch appears to have been from one of the row of horse chestnuts on Acton Green Common.

Local ward councillor Gary Malcolm has been critical of tree maintenance of the borough in the past.

He said, ‘The Council has failed many times over the past few years to properly prune, remove dead trees or maintain our many highway trees.

‘I think someone needs to review the circumstances to see whether it was possible to predict the fall of large branches or trees.’

An Ealing Council spokesperson disputed this saying, “We routinely inspect all of our trees to ensure they are healthy, structurally safe, and not causing a nuisance. However, no inspection or maintenance programme can entirely eliminate the risk of branches dropping.

“This particular tree was surveyed as part of our three-yearly inspection programme on 23 February 2023. It appeared generally healthy at the time of inspection. However, being living, growing organisms, trees can become infected with disease and decay fungi, and are also permanently subjected to weather conditions. Branches sometimes fall off trees unexpectedly, even with regular surveys and monitoring of the trees.

“An emergency inspection of the trees in that area is taking place today (Friday 20 September) and any remedial work identified will be addressed urgently.”
