A fire alarm at the Tabard Pub on Bath Road this Thursday (21 November) forced an evacuation of the premises and the theatre upstairs.

The cast of the hit production of The Business of Murder was required to abandon its rehearsal and customers had to leave their drinks after smoke was seen coming out of one of the electrical cupboards in the pub accommodation area at around half past two in the afternoon. The pub’s three cats also needed to make a speedy exit.

Warm shelter was offered across the road by St. Michael and All Angels Church including a space for the rehearsals to continue for which both the pub staff and the theatre expressed their gratitude.

The Fire Brigade was called to investigate and arrived swiftly to isolate the issue, which was found to caused by an old electricity meter.

No serious damage had been done and by 5pm the pub's power was restored and the pub reopened.

Proving the old adage that ‘the show must go on’, the theatre was able to go ahead with its 7.30pm sold-out performance of The Business of Murder, to an appreciative audience.

John Higginson, General Manager of the Tabard, said, "We have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from our pub regulars, theatre audiences and the local community. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to everyone helped us to reopen our doors so quickly."

The Business of Murder concludes its run this Saturday (23 November) with a matinee and evening performance (at 6pm). At the time of writing there were a small number of tickets available for both performances. Click here to purchase.
