SECONDARY
SCHOOLS ADMISSIONS PROCESS IS UNDERWAY
Applications
for next year must be made by 15th November
The
admissions process for children starting secondary
schools in 2003 starts this week with the publication
of a new brochure to help parents decide which
school is right for their child. The brochure
is currently being distributed to Year 6 pupils
in Chiswick’s Primary schools.
The
brochure, which is available from the Civic
Centre for parents with children at Primary
school outside Hounslow, also provides details
of a special meeting to be held at the Civic
Centre on Monday 23 September. The meeting,
at which places are limited, is designed to
help parents who have particular difficulty
with choosing a school or have additional questions.
The
admissions process for Secondary schools has
long been recognised as one of the most important
points in a child’s education, and so the LEA
is strongly urging parents to take extra care
when filling in the Secondary School application
forms. In some cases parents have not been
successful in gaining a place at their first
preference school because they do not meet
the admissions criteria for that school.
Cllr
Colin Ellar, Executive Member for Lifelong
Learning, said, “In Hounslow we provide every
child with a place at Secondary school, but
one of the consequences of the continuing improvements
at GCSE and A Level is the fact that our schools
are becoming more and more popular. That is
why it is essential that parents take all available
advice and find out as much as possible about
the different Secondary schools in the Borough.”
Cllr
Ellar continued, “We have such a wide range
of opportunities available to students aged
11-18 it is often a challenge for parents to
pick a school that would be most suitable for
their child. It is a decision that has to made
with the long term in mind and so parents must
be clear about the needs of their child and
the opportunities available from each secondary
school.”
The
Admission brochure for 2003, which is being
distributed to all Primary and Junior schools
at the moment, provides a comprehensive guide
to the admissions process. Secondary schools
in Hounslow will also be holding Open Evenings
and Open Days during late September and Early
October for parents to visit the school and
meet the staff.
Applications
for Secondary School places, for September
2003, must be made by 15 November 2002.
