Chiswick Excels in Middlesex School's FA Competitions
37 years of hurt ends with two teams winning titles

Two teams from Chiswick School have emerged victorious in this year’s Middlesex Schools’ FA competitions with five different age groups reaching semi-finals. Previously the school hadn’t won in any age group since 1987.
The competition was founded in 1932 and exists to manage and develop football within educational establishments in the boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow. It sees private and state schools compete against each other for the title of being the best school football team in the area.
Chiswick School’s success across a range of age groups was praised by the organisers. Three three teams progressed to the Middlesex finals after the U18s narrowly lost to Northolt High 4-3 and the year 7s lost to Bishops Ramsey in a hard-fought game.
The Year 8 girls, Year 9 boys and Year 9 girls all found themselves in the finals which took place at Rectory Park. The Year 8 girls played first against a strong Latymer Team and lost narrowly. The girls were praised for their spirit and fantastic attitude throughout the competition.
The Year 9 girls went one better and won the cup beating Highgate School 3-1 to end 37 years of hurt for the school. Mr Ubor and Miss Werdley who have coached them throughout the year said this extraordinary success will live long in the Chiswick School memory and described the performance of every team member as superb.
The Year 9 boys matched the girls cup success winning 1-0 vs University College School, Hampstead. An expertly converted penalty at the beginning of the second half put Chiswick in control of the final. Resolute defence from everyone in the squad for the remainder of the game saw Chiswick victorious.
Mr Gorvin, the Assistant Head for Sport, said, “the school is delighted, this is the culmination of not one season's hard work. The Year 9 team has been working towards this for over three years and this is a wonderful lesson for our students who have first-hand experience of working for something over a period of time and being rewarded for their effort and determination. It is also a signal that you don’t need to go to private school to enjoy sporting success”.
The school offers a range of sports including rowing and fencing and has a netball team in addition to an elite football programme run in conjunction with Brentford Football Club.
Mr Lewis, Head of PE and Sport is already looking forward to the summer term and welcoming local primary schools to use the school field for their sports day.
