Traffic chaos in the Chiswick area continued on Monday morning (30 October) due to the overrunning of the road works on Acton Lane.

These were due to be finished yesterday but the road was completely closed between the roundabout at the junction with Bollo Lane and the one by Essex Place.

These works were due to be finished before the return of most schools this week after the half term. It is understood that heavy rain over the weekend may have contributed to delays.

Although locals reported delays of nearly an hour travelling along the length of Chiswick High Road, traffic is likely to be less heavy than it was last week because engineering work on the District line has been completed and local stations, including Chiswick Park and Turnham Green have reopened.

The road needed to be dug up to lay electricity cables into new buildings in the area.

We have asked both Hounslow Council and SSE, the company responsible for the works, when the road will reopen and have yet to receive a response.

A workman at the site said that they would be hard pressed to finish the project by the end of the day and there were some difficult aspects of the job yet to be completed so he couldn’t confirm when they would be finished.

The closure at the junction with Bollo Lane this Monday morning

Originally, there was only going to be a single lane closure for the work with the road to remain open in one direction. However, during the course of the work the road was unexpectedly completely closed. There have been reports that this was due to safety issues with drivers ignoring the restrictions and driving the wrong way. Also, it has been suggested that the workmen on the site were abused and were having their safety compromised by drivers flouting the restrictions.

Many drivers seem to be unaware that the closure has taken place and are proceeding north up Acton Lane only to be met by a barrier. Some are choosing to u-turn but a significant amount of traffic has been observed turning into the Sainsbury’s car park to get back onto Chiswick High Road.
