E-scooter battery blamed after flames seen coming from waste
July 22, 2024 The contents of an Ealing Council bin lorry making recycling collections in the Bedford Park this Monday morning (22 July) have been dumped on The Avenue. According to refuse collectors working for the council contractor, Greener Ealing, smoke and flames started to come from the back of the lorry at some time after 9am. As a precaution the entire load was deposited on the street and the Fire Brigade was called. Based on previous experiences the staff believe that the cause of the fire was an e-bike or e-scooter battery that was put in with recycling waste. Ealing Council has yet to confirm what the cause of the incident.
The Fire Brigade sent one fire engine to the scene and firefighters doused down the pile of wasterand remained to monitor the pile of refuse as it was being gathered. The police closed The Avenue between Marlborough Crescent and Blandford Road to allow Greener Ealing vans to collect the waste. The clean up job was completed before noon with very little evidence left of what had occurred.
E3 buses were diverted via Acton Lane, Beaconsfield Road and South Parade, missing stops between Wilkinson Way (A and H) and Bedford Road (J and K) but service reverted to normal before midday. Recycling collections were reportedly only slightly delayed by the incident.
An Ealing Council spokesperson said, “A fire started within some of the waste on one of our recycling vehicles on The Avenue, Chiswick at about 9am this morning. The crew immediately called the Fire Brigade who put out the fire, emptying the contents of the vehicle onto the road. Our street cleansing team has cleared up the waste and no collections were affected. The cause of the fire is being investigated.”

Council Confirms Stirling Road Tip Closure Date |
|
Recycling centre to shut permanently later this month Ealing Council has officially confirmed the closure date for the Stirling Road Recycling Centre in South Acton. The facility is to shut permanently at 4pm on Friday 26 November. It is understood that the site has been acquired by a storage company which operates from an adjacent plot and wishes to expand. Previously there had been no authoritative word on when the centre would close but staff had been telling people they expected their last day to be 28 November. The council announced its intention to close the tip this February despite growth in recycling rates having stalled in the borough. The council blames government funding cuts and said that it would be consolidating waste and recycling operations to one main site at the larger Greenford Reuse and Recycling Centre. Residents in the area can also use the recycling centre at Twyford Abbey Road. The Townmead Road Recycling Centre in Mortlake, which many residents of Chiswick and Acton are likely to use as an alternative, is back to full capacity after being hit by a fire earlier this year but booking is required. Unlike the remaining Ealing borough facilities it is within the ULEZ.
