Approval Urged for Power Road Coffee Roastery
Curious Roo wants to relocate from British Grove

Plans for a coffee roastery to relocate to Power Road have been recommended for approval.
Curious Roo has applied (00890/11/P3) for a change of use for the building at the rear of number 11 which will require some alterations to the roof and a new steel chimney.
The company is currently based at British Grove near the eastern end of Chiswick High Road having been there since 2016.
It was founded by Australians Edwin and Magda Harrison, after they lived for a year in Uganda, with the aim of serving coffee in a way that highlight the beans’ origins.
As well as the roastery, they own the Artisan coffee shop chain which has a branch on the corner of Chiswick High Road and Goldhawk Road.
The application received a number of objections on the grounds of noise, odour and the safety implications for neighbouring properties as well as the potential impact on the Thorney Hedge Road Conservation Area and Power Road’s art deco buildings.
The borough planners rejected these submissions in a report saying that it was an appropriate land use for Locally Significant Industrial Site and did no harm to the appearance of the area or living conditions for those living nearby.
The existing equipment, which is to be transferred from the British Grove site, was installed following Community Enforcement engagement due to resident complaints which resulted in no statutory nuisance enforcement action proceeding. Any potential noise or odour pollution would be restricted by conditions that came with the grant of permission. The planners’ report says that Curious Roo have been careful to design their operations to ensure that there is no impact on the neighbours.
The application will be considered at a forthcoming meeting of the borough planning committee.
