Blaze in timber yard leads to evacuation of nearby homes
Both the Chiswick High Road and Acton Lane were shut both ways near the junction of the two roads due to a fire on Tuesday evening. Emergency services were called at 17.24 to reports of a a major blaze in the timber yard opposite Sainsbury's. The fire completely destroyed the single storey workshop and a 200 metre hazard zone was set up because gas cylinders were believed to be involved in the blaze. Around 50 people were evacuated and the Piccadilly line suspended between Hammersmith and Acton Town and the District line suspended between Earls Court and Richmond and Earls Court and Acton Town. It took almost two and a half hours for four fire engines and around 20 firefighters from Acton, Chiswick and Heston fire stations to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation. December 20, 2007 |
