Any lingering hopes of a reopening of Chiswick Police Station appear to have been dashed with the property now being marketed for sale.
It is being sold through estate agents Knight Frank who started advertising the details this Monday (20 September).
The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) gave the final approval of the station this June with Deputy Mayor Sophie Linden providing the necessary authorisation.
It is part of a package of disposals of 16 stations and two residential properties that City Hall believes will bring in between £79.9 million and £102.7 million and save £4.8 million in annual running costs.
The report proposing the sale states that the Chiswick station has no public facing activities but it did have a front counter until several years ago. It did reopen for a few weeks when Hounslow Police Station was being refurbished.
No expected price is given for the 0.42 acre site at 205-207 Chiswick High Road but it is being marketed as a development opportunity and designated as residential and retail.
It is widely expected that the existing building which extends to approximately 23,953 sq ft will be demolished and a new development with shops on the ground floor and flats on three upper floors will be proposed to replace it.
When the sales were raised at the Mayor’s Question Time, Sadiq Khan said, “Thanks to the record levels of City Hall investment in the Met and the Government’s partial reversal of cuts, officer numbers are rising. Consequently, a review of the Met’s entire estate is underway in order to look at the long-term plans for police station buildings and the potential impact from the increase in police officer numbers. My top priority is to make Londoners safer – I have ensured that there’s a 24-hour police front counter in every London borough and the review of the Met’s estate will not mean changes to this commitment.”
The site is being offered for sale by informal tender and unconditional offers are sought for the freehold interest.
