The jury at the trial of Daniel Khalife, the former soldier who is accused of escaping from Wandsworth Prison, has seen CCTV footage of him on the run including when he was in Chiswick.

The 23-year-old is on trial at Woolwich Crown Court for allegedly absconding by strapping himself to the underside of a food delivery lorry on the morning of 6 September, 2023.

His subsequent route across south west and west London was captured numerous times on CCTV. Among the evidence presented to the court was footage of him in a newsagent on Grove Park Road at 8.22am on 8 September purchasing a newspaper.

The police also released a clip which showed him pulling a catering trolley on the morning of his escape in which he was wearing a blue top and black trousers. A headcount later revealed that he was not in the prison sparking a major manhunt, with the police eventually stopping a van in which it is said that he tied himself under with bedsheets, in Putney.

By the afternoon of the 6 September, he had changed into an olive green t-shirt and shorts and was captured on camera entering a Mountain Warehouse shop in Richmond and taking a blue cap and putting into his bag.

Later that day he was filmed walking next to the river on the towpath towards Richmond Bridge.

Early the following day he entered the Marks and Spencer store in Kew and used cash to buy more clothes. By 10am he had made it as far as Hammersmith and went into the Sainsbury’s in the Livat Shopping Centre wearing a face mask. At around 11:20am, Khalife bought a Samsung J5 mobile phone for £89 from a shop on King Street.

After the sighting in Chiswick on Friday (8 September) there was an intensive search around the area of Chiswick House Gardens with sightings reported on Strand on the Green, Chiswick Mall and Corney Reach Road.

This prompted a large police presence in the Grove Park area later in the day on Friday with a National Police Air Service helicopter observed circling above Chiswick House Gardens until around 5am on Saturday morning.

He was seen again the following day entering a McDonald’s and buying an espresso and by 11am had been apprehended on a canal towpath in north west London about six kilometres away from Chiswick.

He was found with a mountain bike and the Waitrose bag he had been pictured with in the Chiswick newsagent as well as a phone, receipts and about £200 in cash.

Khalife was already facing charges relating to the Official Secrets Act and Terrorism Act at the time of the alleged escape from prison. He is denying all the charges against him.
