The Addison Singers Classical and Jazz Choirs are to perform a joint concert at featuring a repertoire of British and American music.

Both choirs have been rehearsing over the summer term to present a Festival of Music in which maestros Jarman, Hough and Morgan will lead the Jazz Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber and Oratorio Choirs.

The performance is taking place on Saturday 29 June at 7.30pm at St Peter’s Church in Southfield Road.

For the Jazz choirs, the emphasis is on music played at jazz/popular and classical music festivals throughout the decades. The Jazz Choir tips its hat to the spirit of the counterculture movement of the 60’s and 70’s with two songs from the musical Hair (Aquarius and Let the Sunshine In). The "Hippie culture" was responsible for many famous festivals, including Woodstock, and the original "Summer of Love" in Golden Gate Park. My Funny Valentine, performed by Miles Davis at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival, and Roberta Flack at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1996, are but two of the many artists to take on this standard. Other numbers include All the Cats Join In, Caravan (Ellington at 1969 Berlin Jazz Festival); there is a balm in Gilead (Montreaux Jazz Festival), and the ever-fun I Say Yeh Yeh!

The Jazz Ensemble will be revisiting some old favourites to include Embraceable You (played by Miles Davis at Festival International de Jazz in 1949), I Say a Little Prayer, Old Devil Moon (notably sang by Carmen McRae at the Newport Jazz Festival, established in 1954), One for My Baby, Steam Heat, and That Old Black Magic.

The classical choirs will be performing “The Passing of the Year”, by Jonathan Dove and “The Sprig of Thyme”, by John Rutter.

All the choirs will join together to perform “New York, New York” by Kander and Ebb and “Jubilate Deo” by Karl Jenkins.

Tickets in advance cost £18 or £3 for under 16s or £2 more if bought on the door on the night.

The concert is sponsored by local estate agents Horton and Garton.

New members are always welcome to join the Addison Group of Singers, which is made up of three different singing classes and four different choirs for singers of all ages, abilities and musical interests. It was founded more than 30 years ago with David Wordsworth as its Musical Director since 1995. Matthew Thomas Morgan - newly appointed Music Director, Classical – took up his post at the beginning of 2023 to conduct the Chamber Choir and Oratorio Choir.

The Addison Singers comprises two classical choirs – an auditioned Chamber Choir and larger non-auditioned Oratorio Choir; and two jazz choirs – an auditioned Jazz Ensemble and a larger non-auditioned all-female Jazz Choir. It also offers three different singing classes to meet the needs of beginners, intermediate and the more competent, experienced singer.
