We talked to Sam Harrison this week to flesh out the details of his plans to open a cafe/deli in Chiswick and he told us he was 'genuinely very excited' to be making a return to W4.

As reported earlier there will be a new branch of Sam's Larder at 59-61 Turnham Green Terrace, the double fronted unit formerly occupied by beauty spa Luminis. The venture is by Sam and his business partner Fanny Stocker. An opening date of mid-September is currently anticipated.

Sam says that the original Sam's Larder, which opened two years ago near his Sam's Riverside restaurant in Hammersmith, was originally just meant as a response to the pandemic. Customers were unwilling or unable to dine out because of lockdown restrictions but missed the quality dining the restaurant offered. Sam's Larder provided an opportunity for them to use the 'Best of British' ingredients that characterised the menu at the main restaurant. The delivery service also became very popular with some customers simply ringing up and asking Sam's to provide the basis for a meal for eight that evening.

He told us, "The Chiswick store will be our first standalone Sam's Larder and it aims to be a foodie heaven filled with all the products we want to support."

Sam's sourcing policy concentrates on local ingredients from producers he knows personally and can guarantee quality. The deli counter will feature this range with British goods predominating include charcuterie and cheeses although he has not attempted to look to these shores for olive oil. The wines will be hand-picked by Sam himself using vineyards where he has a good relationship with the owner and providing bottles generally not available widely in the UK.

The cornerstone of the Sam's Larder offering is the 'Frozen By Sam's' range which offers meal freshly prepared in the Sam's Riverside kitchen. Popular in this range is Sam's Fish Pie and a chicken, mushroom bacon and tarragon pie. There are also some dishes made using the recipes of the grandmother of the head chef at the Riverside. Ashley Tinoco is from Goa and his prawn curry is a firm favourite of the existing Sam's Larder customers in Hammersmith.

The 'Frozen by Sam's' range at the moment is selling for £14-£16 for meals for two.

There will also be freshly made sandwiches, soups, salads and coffee served on the premises with a kitchen area in the basement. The internal configuration of the tables inside has not yet been finalised but it is hoped that Sam's Larder Chiswick will be licensed serving through to the middle of the evening with later licensed hours only for special events like wine tastings.

There will be no fresh fruit and veg sold at the Chiswick Sam's Larder as Sam believes Turnham Green Terrace is already well catered to in that regard.

The store will also stock gifts such as candles and hand creams made by smaller British suppliers.

Sam knows the local market having run a Brasserie on Barley Mow Passage for a decade up to 2015. That guided him to introduce a dog-friendly policy for Sam's Larder with those walking their pooch on Chiswick Back Common and Acton Green clearly an important part of the target market.

Delivery services will be offered but not through any of the online applications such as Deliveroo.

The Chiswick branch may not be the last Sam's Larder to open and he says he is looking at other opportunities in west London. When asked if he would ever consider opening a restaurant in Chiswick again he said, "Never say never" but added that the operating conditions were tough for businesses in the area with rents so high.
