The latest shop to close in the Chiswick area is Cassius & Coco on Turnham Green Terrace.

Opened just two years ago in the unit between Covent Garden Fishmongers and Windfall health store, it was a concept store with carefully chosen items from designers such as Compagnie de Provence and Artisanne. It also offered a selection of stationery and gifts as well as a range of art and prints. The company still has a shop in Crouch End and is open online for local design buffs sad to be losing this quirky independent store.

The closure of Cassius & Coco is reflective of a wider difficultly amongst independent stores to maintain businesses in the area. Fat Face was replaced by Starbucks Coffee in January of this year, leading to concerns that the high rates on Turnham Green Terrace are causing a sustainability problem for retailers.

The range of independent shops on the Terrace has made it a popular destination for locals and people outside the area. However, a move towards larger chains taking up occupancy is fuelling concerns about the troubled market for smaller shops, and the loss of the unique character of this street.

Recently a taskforce was set up by a number of local traders and councillors to work out strategies to reduce the number of vacant units in the area and prevent Chiswick becoming a ‘clone town’ dominated by chain stores.

We have tried to contact Cassius & Coco but they have not responded.
