Independent discount book shop still going strong
With independent book sellers disappearing fast from the nation’s high street partly due to competition from tax avoiding online competitors, Bookcase on Chiswick High Road still continues to thrive. It recently celebrated 25 years at 268 Chiswick High Road making it one of the longest surviving business in the centre of town and one of a dwindling band of non-chain stores in the heart of Chiswick. Unlike the other independent bookseller across the road, Fosters, which specialises in early editions and second hand, Bookcase sells new books deeply discounted including art and travel books, recently published fiction, children’s books and classics. These can often be bought at prices below those being charge by major online retailers. The bookshop opened around 2.00pm on 26 May 1993 on a high street that was somewhat different to its present incarnation. John Major was Prime Minister, Ace of Base were at number one with ‘All That She Wants’ and only a few people had heard of the internet . Peter Rouland, the Manager of Bookcase said, “In all that time, our core business as discount booksellers has pretty much remained unchanged. I like to think that that is because books remain important to people's inner lives. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for its ongoing support and warmly invite newcomers to pay us a visit.” June 1, 2018 |
