I won't pretend I have all the answers and I won't lie.

There have been times in the past year where I've felt afraid and confused. I've struggled with home schooling and there have been times where I've felt emotionally and physically exhausted. But if you are a leader, you will know that you wake up every day with the ability to create your life, rather than report on it.

In what was a remarkable year, nearly every industry across the globe has felt the effects from the Covid pandemic. Supply chain disruptions, employee motivation, employee productivity, employee fatigue as well as day-to-day working modifications are just some of the wide-ranging challenges that leaders have had to grapple with.

As we enter 2021, it is becoming increasingly clear that these trials are not leaving us anytime soon, and there is no rule book to help leaders navigate the choppy waters. In addition, for those who are relatively new leaders or in a new position, research estimates of outright failure in the next 12-18 months range from 38% to 50%. Furthermore, one of the largest single obstacles facing leaders in the coming year will be to lead effectively during continued uncertainty.

A new year always creates new challenges as well as new hope, and if there is one thing we can be sure of, it's that your business, your colleagues and teams will always need your support. But here's the rub. No one wants support from a struggling or ineffective leader. You need to be creative in the face of uncertainty. You need to make an impact when everyone else is afraid – which includes yourself. You need to keep your focus when everyone around you is losing theirs.
