Richard Briers opens 'Cards for Good Causes' shop
Part of seasonal fund-raising effort at St. Michaels and All Angels
Charity Christmas cards, Advent calendars and other Christmas items have gone on sale at St Michael & All Angels church, Bedford Park - in aid of more than 25 local and national charities. The Cards for Good Causes shop will be open for six weeks, until Saturday December 18th.
The shop was opened on Tuesday morning by local actor Richard Briers. He was welcomed by Mother Nicola Stanley, the curate at St Michael & All Angels, and Isabel Little, the chairman of the charities group at St Michael’s, who has taken over as manager of the shop. (see picture right).
“We are very grateful to Janet and George Miles, who have run the shop for the past six years” said Mrs Little. “They have established it as THE local centre for buying charity Christmas cards, two minutes from Turnham Green tube station. At least 81p in every £1 raised from card sales goes to the charities.”
Last year, the Cards for Good Causes scheme raised over £4.9 million for a wide range of charities, including many of the best-known names, such as Barnardo’s, Help The Aged, the British Heart Foundation, Mencap, the NSPCC and The Samaritans.
The shop at St Michael’s is staffed by dozens of volunteers from the church and will be open every lunchtime and afternoon (from 1 to 5pm) except Sundays. Late opening, till 7pm, is on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and early opening, from 11am, is on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. On Tuesdays, it opens at 12 and closes at 5.30pm.
St Michael’s church is on Bath Road, Chiswick, W4, close to Turnham Green tube station. Look for the red triangular Father Christmas sign!
