More Overnight Closures for Hammersmith Flyover

In addition to westbound carriageway shutting for next two weekends

Transport for London (TfL) have announced more overnight closures of Hammersmith Flyover.

As well as being shut westbound throughout the next two weekends (17-20 April and 24-27 April) there will be four overnight closures this week.

The scheduled closures of the flyover are:

• Monday 13 April 22:30 to 05.00 Tuesday morning
• Tuesday 14 April 2015 from 22:30 to 05.00 Wednesday morning
• Wednesday 15 April 2015 from 22:30 to 05:00 Thursday morning
• Thursday 16 April 2015 from 22:30 to 05:00 Friday morning

During these night-time closures, traffic will not be able to travel over the flyover in either direction. The works during each lift should be completed during the course of one night. However, due to the complexity of the work, they may need to close the flyover for up to two nights for each lifting operation. If this happens, they will reopen the flyover during the day between the overnight works.

Traffic using the A4 Hammersmith flyover, travelling to and from central London, will be diverted from Earl’s Court to the A40 and then onto A406 to join the A4/M4 at Chiswick Roundabout. Diversion routes will be signed during the works and local access below the flyover will not be affected.

During the weekend closures, which will be from 10:30pm on Friday until 5am on Monday morning at the latest, affected traffic will be diverted via the road network beneath the flyover and the A40 Western Avenue.

According to TfL the repairs have been carefully designed to be carried out in the shortest timeframe possible, helping to keep road disruption to a minimum. The work has also been coordinated around other planned work in the local area, including the forthcoming construction of the East-West Cycle Superhighway in central London, which begins in April.

TfL say they are currently in the process of replacing the movement bearings for the Hammersmith Flyover and have completed 36 of the 60 planned lifts needed to enable these works and intend to carry out further lifts in April.

Tfl say that drivers who would ordinarily use the flyover should follow the signed diversion via the A40. Research during previous closures of the flyover showed that drivers using the signed diversion via the A40 experienced less delay than those travelling on the A4 Great West Road through the Hammersmith gyratory.
