Strand on the Green house sale would be highest ever
The current record for the most expensive ever Chiswick property could be smashed with by a Georgian Strand on the Green House. Zachary House has been put on the market with offers in excess of £10,000,000 being asked for. This would easily top the current highest priced sale, Walpole House which was bought by designer Jasper Conran last year. According to the agent Fine and Country the 8,000 sq ft property has a 'country feel' as well as the latest in technology. There are up to eight bedrooms and seven terraces overlooking the river including a roof garden across the entire width of the house. It is equipped with air conditioning and a substantial entertaining complex including a cinema. The property has a separate granny flat plus a mews house and garaging at the rear which is attached to the house by a large conservatory with fountain. There is a secluded garden with lawn and shrubs. The house was named after Mrs Anna Maria Zachary, a widow, lived here from 1797. Her son, a barrister of the Inner Temple, succeeded her and remained until at least 1823. Afterwards it fell into disrepair until Sydney Clough, an architect who designed the Richmond Ice Rink, saw the house whilst passing his small yacht in 1926. He bought it in 1929 and restored it, removing the yacht repair workshop that operated from the ground floor. He battled with the local authority to prevent commercial development when The Moorings site came up for sale. An enthusiastic yachtsman, he was a founder member of the Little Ship Club and was very active in the Yacht and Motor Boat club and the Strand on the Green Sailing Club. It later became the home of musician Midge Ure who, together with Bob Geldolf wrote 'Do They Know its Christmas?' in the garage of the property. This was the Band Aid song that became the top selling single of all time. Local estate agent Andrew Nunn commented, "We have seen, and will continue to see, the top end homes pushing prices forever higher defying the general market activity which has become somewhat lacklustre in light of recent financial conditions. Statement houses in Chiswick are now appealing to a much wider audience and the £3m+ market is particularly strong. Top Ten Most Expensive Chiswick Homes
