Local
Parish launches project to support Philippine community
Chiswick’s
Catholic community aims to raise £36,000 to support 90 families
living in Manila, Philippines. The drive was launched as part of
the community’s Parish Lenten Project running from 6 March
until 20 April 2003.
At
an official launch service on Sunday 2nd March at Our lady of Grace
and St Edward Catholic Church on Chiswick High Road, Monsignor James
Curry said: “This year our Lenten project will be to help
the poorest of the poor in the slums of Manila. Our target of £36,000
will provide decent housing for 90 families, a small medical clinic,
a basketball court for the youth, and a hall to be used as a school
for the children and for adult education programmes”.
Known
as GAWAD KALINGA this is a holistic approach to community development
integrating education, health and nutrition, livelihood, housing
and environment. Monsignor James Curry continued: “This project
does not only build houses but a community spirit is born. The slogan
of the project says it all – we believe that poverty is not
about lack of resources. It is about giving up of ourselves –
to the extent of having less for ourselves so that others may have
more, and everyone will have enough”. The GAWAD KALINGA Lenten
project will be conducted in partnership with the organisation Couples
for Christ International who is spearheading these projects in the
Philippines.
The
official launch of the project was attended by the Ambassador of
the Embassy of the Philippines, His Excellency Cesar B. Bautista
and his wife.
