Thames Tradesmen to compete against team constructing Barnes Bridge walkway
A charity rowing race is to take place between Thames Tradesmen’s Rowing Club and members of the project team building the new pedestrian footbridge at Dukes Meadows Knights Brown, the company appointed by Hounslow Council to complete the design and construction of the walkway, will have a crew to compete against the nearby rowing club on Friday 26 November 2021 at 2pm between Chiswick Bridge and Dukes Meadows band stand. The crews are aiming to raise £1,000 for the Hogarth Charitable Trust which provides opportunities and support for local young people through its independent Hogarth Youth Centre. The four-strong team from Knights Brown comprises of the site’s project manager Meen Gurung, senior engineer Enda McEvoy, multi-skilled groundworker Richard Glennon and year in industry engineer Sam Rai. Meen Gurung said, “We’re having a lot of fun as a team training for the race and are looking forward to putting our new-found skills to the test. None of us had rowed before we started training so it’s a real journey of discovery for everybody. We’re grateful to Thames Tradesmen’s Jackie Eastlands, Peter Robinson and Nigel Brophy who have been very welcoming and helped us get in shape and learn the techniques needed to put on a good show when the big day comes later this month.” The Knight’s Brown team will race against a quad made up of the recent Thames Tradesmen’s Learn To Row course: Robert Overend, David Vincent, Ed Crowther and Paul Stapley. Nigel Brophy, Chairman of Thames Tradesmen’s Rowing Club said, “We offered to teach members of the Knights Brown team to row on the Tideway; an opportunity they wouldn’t have got anywhere else. Not only is it good for community spirit, it also benefits the Hogarth Charitable Trust.” Nigel added, “Our Learn to Row courses have been a huge success. We have been able to teach over 100 people how to row over the past 18 months. With more people working from home, learning a new skill like rowing has become a popular sport to take up in a covid safe environment.’ Everyone is welcome to attend the race and show their support of the crews. Anyone wishing to support the crews’ fundraising effort for the Hogarth Charitable Trust can donate online.
