A blue sky providing the backdrop to the Spinnaker tower turned out to be a propitious omen for the home team, after a run of three defeats. Chiswick have to learn that survival in London 1 requires the sort of professionalism shown by Gosport, and not the prevailing attitude that seems to suggest that a Saturday wedding will allow some of the other guys to get a game, and that International matches should mean a cancellation of League fixtures. Getting a team up was apparently a problem.

A further problem at the start of the match was the absence, courtesy of British rail, of the selected fly-half Simon Hallett. Joe Grindle took over the play-making role very happily, and made a good fist of it, but the necessarily re-organised back division, missing the Captain and scrum-half, and a couple of injured players, never really settled. A further misfortune struck Chiswick early on, Richard Ridley picking up a shoulder injury.
