Meads close the gap at the top Amateur Football Combination - Old Meadonians 6 Old Wokingians 0 Old Meadonians sharpened their claws in preparation for next week’s Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup semi-final with a six goal mauling of mid table Old Wokingians, visitors to Riverside Lands on Saturday to cut the gap on U.C.L., the league leaders, who could only draw with bottom of the table Danes. Without leading scorer Colin Hawkins Meads were buoyed up by two hat-tricks, one from Hawkins partner Ed Glover and one from midfielder Kevin Quinn. Meads were also helped by the welcome return from injury of centre back Ian Williamson to boost their watertight defence and allow utility man Len Wapshott to partner Glover and contribute by winning most high balls up front. On twenty minutes the first of a constant stream of crosses from skipper Jack Costello gave Quinn a tap in at the far post and ten minutes on Wapshott’s header set Glover on a forty yard dash to crash the ball in from just inside the box. The second half saw Meads pile on the pressure and complete the rout with Quinn and Glover getting two more apiece. Team: Sayers, Salanson, Williamson, Hanley, (Jordan), Costello, Pointon, Bond, Quinn, Rhone, Wapshott, Glover.
