Old Meadonians

Old Meadonians’ defence of their Amateur Football Association Senior Cup at Riverside Lands on Saturday saw them ease comfortably into the last eight efficiently dismissing unbeaten Old Salvatorians from the division below in a six goal blitz.

It took Meads five minutes to take the lead when Colin Hawkins robbed a dilatory defender on the left, cut in and beat the keeper crisply on his near post from fifteen yards. The visitors then showed that they could play neat football but although they kept their hosts at bay for the rest of the half they could make no progress against a Meads’ back four missing two regular members.

Within two minutes of the restart Meads added a second. This time it was Hawkins the provider as he crossed from the right for Kevin Quinn to peal off at the far post and head imperiously. From then on the toll of Meads’ relentless harrying in the first half began to take its toll. Hawkins’ pace allowed him to steal a fifty/fifty ball and notch his second.

Number four came as mid-fielder Dwayne Rhone volleyed in a cross from Dan Salanson and Hawkins’ tireless partner up front, Steve Bowring got his reward with a fifth from ten yards. Hawkins finally rounded off the rout with his third with five minutes to go.

Team: Sayers, Salanson, Williamson, Wapshott, McGuinness, Costello, Pointon, Quinn, (Cope), Rhone, Bowring, Hawkins.
