Old Meadonians

Old Meadonians returned to their league programme after their recent triumph in the final of the A.F.A. cup by administering a five- one drubbing to third placed U.C.L. Academicals under lights at Hanwell Town on Tuesday.

Meads are now two points ahead with three games in hand over second placed Hamptonians and showed their class with a relentless, all action performance which left the Accies chasing shadows for most of the evening.

The few occasions when they had the ball the Accies were harried into simple mistakes as Meads’ tireless covering and tackling took its toll. Meads opened their account on twenty minutes when midfielder Kevin Quinn headed in a Jack Costello free-kick. Most of the damage, however came from the pace and bewildering positional play of strikers Colin Hawkins and Ed Glover. Hawkins got the second after Glover had hit the post and then weighed in with a brilliant solo effort, leaving a trail of defenders from thirty yards out and finishing crisply from fifteen yards.

The second half saw very little letup in the onslaught as Meads pressed forward first Glover hit the bar from twenty five yards and ten minutes on got his reward, volleying in a cross from the left. Sub Steve Bowring got the fifth with ten minutes to go and Accies got their undeserved consolation in injury time.

Team: Sayers, Salanson, Butler, Williamson, McGuiness, (Cope), Costello, Kearney, Quinn, (Bond), Rhone, Hawkins, (Bowring), Glover.
